Poorman’s Story
As true philanthropists and entrepreneurs, Norm and Angel Poorman are actively creating local and global community and economic development and change. These high school sweethearts started their careers in the dental profession. But, their heart for people and for innovation has helped them create social solutions and business endeavors that lead to lasting change. Their core conviction is to empower through legacy, first to their two sons, and then to create structures that will endure time and benefit multiple generations.
Norm is a true Texan. He loves people and he loves the land. His heart for people, especially children, is consistently displayed in his attentiveness as a Pediatric Specialist at Children’s Dentistry of Abilene that he established over 20 years ago. Norm's love of creating access to comprehensive care has helped him establish a dental clinic in Mozambique and a mobile clinic in Guatemala. He and Angel have started and served in multiple dental campaigns all over the world.
Norm’s heart for the land has earned him the 2010 Outstanding Conservation Rancher of the Year Award for helping save an endangered species. He loves preserving and utilizing the land he owns for its best potential. This has led him into multiple land and real estate development projects. Norm is currently using these skills and this passion in Texas Adventures, a wild game ranch in the big country region of Texas and in creating a community center in Escuintla, Guatemala in the aftermath of the volcanic eruption.
Angel is an avid connector and catalyst for change. Her heart for philanthropy stems from her desire to see and help the person directly in front of her. Her ability to build framework and structures have helped nonprofits, businesses, and individuals thrive. Angel has written and received grants for local and International relief, including for the US embassy in Belize. As the CEO of United Rescue Alliance, Angel has highly sought expertise. She has consulted multiple nations and territories in community wide disaster response, including Guatemala, Belize, Bahamas, Indonesia, and Puerto Rico.
Through the vessel of United Rescue Alliance, I have had the unique opportunity to establish alliances with multiple nations which I have had the privilege of serving as a consultant and advisor for humanitarian aid. One expression of this has been through the organization Estamos Unidos, aimed at uniting Latin American nations. In direct alignment with the mission of empowering nations, United Rescue Alliance has created multiple internship opportunities with Lee University and Tel Aviv University’s through their masters degree program in Emergency Management. I have also had the opportunity to speak at a forum facilitated by Well Versed in Washington, DC, an organization that brings biblical principles of governance to government leaders and the people who elect them.
With over a decade of field experience in international disaster response, URA thrives to collaborate with complex networks to (re)build communities that strengthen nations. Some of these nations and territories include Guatemala, Belize, Bahamas, Indonesia, Mozambique, and Puerto Rico. This has led her to serve as the US President of Eshet Lapidot which stands for Israeli Women Empowerment, and to help multiple Latin American nations create connectivity and response framework around these values.
Currently, Norm and Angel’s passions of land and innovation are melding together as they are pursuing Ag Tech ventures in Singapore, the UAE, Guatemala and Israel. Norm and Angel bring their expertise and their wisdom as speakers, mentors, and consultants all over the globe. The lasting impact from their conviction to work neighbor to neighbor before nation to nation has brought many organizations and communities into partnership with them. Their holistic approach gives hope, saves lives, and creates opportunity wherever they go.
